Biography
Robert W. Wood is a tax lawyer with Wood LLP, a tax law firm based in San Francisco, California (www.WoodLLP.com) where he provides services to clients in tax matters worldwide. He is admitted to practice law in California, New York, Arizona, Montana, Wyoming, Washington D.C., Texas and Washington, and is also admitted as a Solicitor in England and Wales. Wood is Certified as a Specialist in Taxation by the State Bar of California. He is a graduate of University of Chicago Law School.
Wood is the author of numerous books on tax law as well as many hundreds of articles. Wood is the author of, Taxation of Damage Awards and Settlement Payments (5th Edition © 2021), Qualified Settlement Funds and Section 468B, and Legal Guide to Independent Contractor Status (5th Edition).
Wood is best known nationally for advising on the taxation of settlements and judgments. He has been called the "preeminent authority for tax practitioners on the federal taxation of damages and settlement payments." (Gibbs, Tax Notes, April 18, 2005, p. 393). The United States Tax Court labeled him “a nationally renowned expert on the taxation of legal awards.” He frequently counsels clients and writes tax opinions on the tax consequences of litigation payments and recoveries. Wood is often listed as one of the leading tax lawyers in the United States.
